“It was a bit unusual to be a young female in business in the 60’s. But starting a business isn’t hard, it’s just hard work which can still be fun.”

— Jan Wood

It all started in in the 1960’s when as a teenager Jan Wood started imagining something better than a rubber band to tie back her long blonde hair. With an eye for fashion, and love for innovation, Jan set to work on creating what would become New Zealand’s first hair accessory, two plastic beads attached to a woven elastic band. Seeing an opportunity to commercialise her invention, an assembly line was soon setup on the family dining table and she started selling door to door to pharmacies. 30 Years on, Jan Wood Ltd. became one of New Zealand’s most successful beauty distributors.

Today Jan’s son Tim Cunningham runs The Beauty Collective and the drive to create innovative and functional beauty products continues. We remain a 100% family owned and operated business.
